Kelly Bishop grew up in Denver, Colo. and trained to be a Ballet dancer. At the age of eighteen, she landed her first dancing job in a year ballet company at Radio City Music Hall. In 1967, she was cast in ‘Golden Rainbow’ and soon after as the sexy, hard-edged Sheila in ‘A Chorus Line’. For her outstanding performances, she won Tony and Drama Desk Awards and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dramatic career.

She was cast in Paul Mazursky’s drama opposite Jill Clayburgh named ‘An Unmarried Woman’.

She went on to play “mama” to several stars in numerous features: Jennifer Grey’s mom in the box-office hit ‘Dirty Dancing’, Howard Stern’s mother in the comedy ‘Private Parts’ and Tobey Maguire’s mom in ‘Wonder Boys’. She also appeared on such films as ‘Blue Moon’, ‘Café Society’, ‘Miami Rhapsody’, ‘Queens Logic’, ‘Me and Him’ and ‘A Guy’s Guide to Marrying Money’.

Her TV credits include Mike Nichols’ series ‘The Thorns’, as Lisa Ann Walter’s mom on the show ‘My Wildest Dreams’. She has also guest-starred on ‘Law & Order’, ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’, and ‘Murphy Brown’. Her theater credits include ‘Six Degrees of Separation’, ‘Proposals’, ‘The Last Night of Ballyhoo’, ‘Bus Stop’ and ‘Precious Sons’. She played Emily on Gilmore Girls. Emily is Lorelai’s mom and wants the best of her daughter.

Kelly Bishop is married to Lee Leonard.
